Schedule reliability on the Asia-Europe trades has been destroyed by four typhoons in seven weeks that created berthing delays lasting up to 14 days across Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan and Yantian as terminals closed and ships sheltered from the storm. The average delay for late vessels on Asia-Europe in mid-September exceeded six days for the first time since the pandemic disruptions. Data from rate benchmarking platform Xeneta showed that on-time performance plummeted to just 6% in August on both the Asia-North Europe and Asia-Mediterranean trades, with residual delays expected to persist through October as the Golden Week shutdown adds to container backlogs. The delays are hitting the Asia-Europe trade lane as carriers rapidly return services to the Suez, placing further pressure on North European import gateways that are already facing structural bottlenecks. With demand on Asia-Europe finally softening after a robust peak season, European shippers and their service providers will have time to take a breath before the end-of-year run up to Lunar New Year begins.

After nearly four years of depressed freight demand, trucking appears poised for a recovery, but how much of a recovery? Freight and economic indicators such as the Cass Freight Shipments Index and the S&P Global US Manufacturing PMI are pointing up. Plenty of containerized freight is waiting to move inland, and retailers are positioning goods near stores. But it's not clear how much additional freight will hit the highway during trucking's peak fall season. It is clear that shippers will have less capacity to call on than in any recent year. Record-breaking fuel prices, a broad-based regulatory crackdown and concerns about accident liability are all tightening capacity. Any wave of demand hitting constrained capacity will push transportation rates even higher -- not the Christmas surprise shippers want.

Refrigerated shipping volumes globally may be expanding at a steady, mid-single-digit pace, but getting reefer containers from Point A to Point B is only becoming more challenging.
