The JOC Top 100 Importers and Exporters: Analyzing the Rankings and Second-Half Trade Outlook
Partner(s):

As the calendar turned to June and the prelude to the summer-fall peak shipping season, US importers and exporters again were trying to get ahead of market- and policy-driven price hikes and disruption. Specifically, US importers again find themselves frontloading shipments on the eastbound trans-Pacific as they race to head off rising bunker fuel surcharges, increasing prices from Asian suppliers, and a new round of tariff uncertainty. That surge in demand is spurring a jump in spot rates and tightening capacity. In fact, capacity has tightened enough to prompt forwarders to warn customers that they must book at least three weeks in advance amid the surge in frontloading of fall and end-of-year holiday merchandise. The increased demand stems in part from uncertainty among shippers about possible further tariff moves by the Trump administration. Following the Supreme Court’s March decision to strike down President Donald Trump’s widespread tariffs implemented in April 2025, the US Trade Representative imposed temporary Section 122 tariffs on all imports. Widespread tariffs tied to forced labor quickly followed. Shippers also are racing to get ahead of expected price increases from Asian suppliers. The S&P Global Market Intelligence Purchasing Managers’ Index™ (PMI®) released in late May saw readings on price pressures and supply shortages reach highs not seen since 2022 as the war in the Middle East keeps the price of oil and related commodities elevated. All of this adds up to another turbulent time for shippers importing to and exporting from the United States.
This hourlong webcast will analyze the state of the market, how it is likely to play out through the fall, and highlight the major findings from the Journal of Commerce’s ranking of Top 100 Importers and Exporters special report.

Midyear Container Shipping Report: Analyzing the Peak Season
Partner:

The intensity of the early peak season on the trans-Pacific trade could drain the rest of volumes in the second half, or the shipping industry might surprise. US imports from Asia in May jumped to 1.68 million TEUs, up 13% from April, almost 20% higher year over year, and the highest since last August, according to PIERS. The National Retail Federation (NRF) has upgraded its forecast for June imports, confirming that the peak shipping season has come early this year. But the NRF says that spike is expected to be short-lived, with the group lowering its prior forecast for imports landing through the rest of the summer and into early fall. In the meantime, large and midsize retailers in the US face the possibility of having their newly agreed service contract rates more than double this summer due to increased bunker fuel costs and hefty peak season surcharges. Last summer, US imports from Asia climbed rapidly in June, peaked in July and then fell just as quickly as they rose. Comparing the current environment to last summer isn’t a good guide, however, as to what to expect this year. The fundamental difference is that growth last summer was confined to the US, so carriers were able to redeploy vessels from other trade lanes to the trans-Pacific. That’s why the price spike lasted only two months. This year, demand is also strong and rates are moving higher in the Asia-Europe, Asia-Mediterranean and South American trades, and that is limiting the capacity and equipment that can be deployed into the trans-Pacific

Midyear Trucking Market Report: Analyzing the Second-Half Outlook
Partner:

An extraordinary reconfiguring of truckload capacity is upsetting what was once a “normal” cyclical cycle in trucking, pushing rates higher despite only moderate, at best, improvement in demand. Shippers are looking at structural changes that will lead to higher trucking costs in the second half and beyond, and they’ll need to adjust strategies to contain costs, where they can. The truckload sector faces regulatory change it hasn’t seen before, with new state and federal laws and court decisions piling on federal rulemakings aimed at getting unsafe truck drivers off the road. Those enforcement efforts are winnowing truckload capacity, which stimulates spot and contract rates. Some freight is shifting to less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers, as well as intermodal rail, as truckload capacity tightens. LTL carriers are positioning themselves to protect rate hikes and to open routes to new types of freight beyond the traditional domestic industrial LTL base. And third parties of various types are increasingly interested in LTL. In this webcast, experts will discuss how these trends will impact shippers and how they can respond.
